Journalism Interns
Position Title: Online Engagement Intern
Reports To: Executive Director
Start Date: January 9, 2012
Location: Berkeley, CA
Position Summary:
CANFIT is seeking talented individuals to help us publish our unique perspectives, expand our customer base and branding, and effectively serve our communities. Gain real world experience in developing an online presence for a national non-profit organization. We are looking for an Online Engagement Intern to help build and engage an online community to support CANFIT’s work. The ideal candidate is Internet savvy; experienced or has a keen interest in new and social media, online advocacy and creating innovate campaigns to grow our online community and presence.
The Online Engagement Intern will work with the CANFIT Executive Director and Program Director to build an online presence for CANFIT through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. This position will also build relationships with and outreach to online news/media outlets and blog sites to promote CANFIT’s work.
Expectations:
- Develop original content for media and social networks as well as contributing to our ongoing publishing strategy writing features for publishing (e.g. Huffington Post, Civil Eats, The Root), synthesizing CANFIT’s programs, practices and policies into effective insights, and blogging about the community healthy eating and physical activity movement — all in partnership with CANFIT’s Executive Director.
- Plan and implement innovative marketing initiatives – including leveraging social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others. Expected results include: understanding CANFIT’s target audiences, connecting them with CANFIT’s insights, and spreading awareness of CANFIT globally.
- Manage Our Various Social Media Accounts
- Reach out to journalists and bloggers focused on health, food systems, social justice, and physical activity by providing them with CANFIT news and future developments. Expected results include: developing and maintain a network of media specialists that track the progress of CANFIT’s work.
- Research and report on online engagement strategies of small- to mid-sized non-profit organizations and coalitions to identify best practices and set CANFIT strategies
- Identify and develop relationships with blog sites
- Strategize email communications protocol and innovative ways for building email list
- Expand and manage online engagement activities
- Produce content for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs
- Build relationships with online communities through weekly conversations on CANFIT issues
- Support online advocacy campaigns
- Produce content for websites
- Gather and analyze data to evaluate success of online strategies
Desired Skills:
- Strong conceptual thinker who can weave case studies and metrics into their communications
- Creative and innovative idea generator – who loves to make them happen
- Deep interest in social measurement tools and outcomes – and how they drive readership
- Exceptional writing and editing skills
- Experience and/or keen interest in online organizing, campaigning or communications or digital storytelling tools
- Willingness to learn about existing social media tools and conventions
- Skills to build and maintain relationships with bloggers, blog sites and key online news/media outlets
- Ability to develop and analyze metrics on benchmarks and best practices for non-profits
- Knowledge of trends within journalism
- Tech-literate
MBA Interns
CANFIT seeks MBA students who can use their business and management skills within social mission-driven enterprises to:
- Refine our program design, codify CANFIT’s lessons learned, and analyze growth options for online programs.
- Create an agency-wide performance dashboard and implement double-bottom-line accounting.
- Set up (and implement) a major donor fund-raising strategy; help us find organizations that would host events for us
- Research employment opportunities for youth in the food system, healthy eating, and built environment sectors.
- Develop various tools, including management dashboards to help monitor key cost and revenue drivers, operational indicators, and social metrics.
- Create (and implement) a marketing plan for our community consulting enterprise.
- Develop (and implement) strategic marketing and communications plans.
- Expand our public/private sector partnerships
- Conduct a feasibility study on establishing a virtual office and e-commerce site
Qualities we seek in an intern:
- Easy grasp of healthy eating and physical activity issues in low-income communities of color
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

- Computers: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Vertical Response, web site administration
- Commit a minimum of 10-15 hours a week for a minimum of three months

Phase 2 of Internship: June 1-August 31, 2012 (20-24 hours per week @ $15-16/hour or monthly stipend of $1500/month)
Summer Program Interns
*This internship position will be made available to apply for on March 2012.
CANFIT has exciting opportunities for students wishing to gain knowledge around program and policy work that focuses on improving nutrition and physical activity for underserved communities.
CANFIT strives to make the intern experience unique and rewarding for students. An internship with CANFIT will consist of:
- Exposure to local, state and national policy work focusing on nutrition and physical activity
- Working on culturally-relevant projects – Students may also be asked to create materials or programs that fit within the CANFIT mission
- Field site visits (community work, conferences, youth projects, presentations, etc)
Qualifications
Junior or senior level undergrad student or graduate student working towards a Baccalaureate or Master degree in public health, community health, nutrition, recreation, health education, health promotion or related field from an accredited college or university; good oral communication and written skills to instruct and interact effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
